Today was a busy day because Kate and I did our first brick workout together! We decided to brave the heat wave in Philadelphia and take on a little bike/running combo.
Kate came down to East Falls and we headed out on Kelly Drive to tackle the loop on our bikes. Kate rode on my bike and I pedaled on fiancé’s bike. If you have been reading for a while now, you might have noticed that fiancé is a tad taller than me! It was a bit of a struggle, but you got to do what you got to do!
What is a Brick Workout?
“A brick workout is when you do one workout immediately after another. For example, you could do a swim followed by a bike or a bike followed by a run. There is no special way you have to do a brick workout. However, the most effective brick workout is one that most resembles the race you will run. So more than likely you are better served doing a swim to bike or a bike to run brick workout for triathlon prep.”
Fiancé’s bike was so big for me that Kate had to hold the bike straight for me to climb on! Once I was up there, I wasn’t getting off!
We still had a blast chatting and pedaling up a storm!
This was a great test run for us for the upcoming SheRox Sprint Triathlon that we both signed up for! I am really excited for the running portion and I am feeling good about the biking, but the swimming part makes me nervous!
Oh well, I shall keep calm and swim, bike and run on!
On a side note – I biked with my camelbak today. It’s a must have with this crazy weather. Love that thing!
We did pretty awesome on our bike ride today. We did the Kelly Drive loop and then a little extra to round out about 9 miles in 45 minutes, which is pretty good!
The sprint tri is calling for 15.5 mile bike ride, which will be a great challenge! I initially thought it was 13.1 miles, so I was a little surprised when Kate told me it was 15.5! I need to get a few more bike rides in before August 1st!
I really hope I can get a proper road bike before the big tri! I love my hybrid, but a road bike would be so much faster! I have an appointment to meet someone this week about a bike I saw on Craigslist! I hope it works out!
After dominating our workout on the bike we decided to live dangerously and tackle a short run too!
We were ready for the second leg of our brick – Bring It On!
We decided to head up the road and change things up a bit and run through Laurel Hill Cemetery. The last time I went there was with fiancé almost a year ago! It was such a cool place to check out and run through.
We did about 2.5 miles in around 25 minutes. Not too shabby! After the brick I was feeling pretty strong!
Hopefully I can get in a few more brick’s this week and early next week before the big race. It’s fun and a nice change of pace from Marathon Training – its great to have something else to focus on for a few weeks before the big runs start creeping up!
It was awesome to run and bike with Kate today! She is doing great training for her first big endurance event! I am so proud of her, she is going to rock the tri with me!
What are your thoughts on brick workouts? Ever done one?

I want to try a brick to see if I can do it! I dunno though haha.. GREAT Job!
I am happy to know what a Brick workout means now. Do you think a swim followed by a run or vice versa would be good preparation for a half marathon? Keep truckin along friend! Good luck in the Tri!
NEVER could have done it without you! Just need to add a swim and a few more bike miles and we are set.
p.s. not how I feel about post-workout pictures being posted! I look rough!
You and Kate did great, especially in this horrific heat!
Keep up the good attitude and smaller training workouts and you'll both be fine. Glad you had your camelback, Kate needs to get herself one too!
